Former Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore was taken into police custody on Wednesday, only hours after the University of Michigan announced his termination. Authorities confirmed that Moore is a suspect in an alleged assault that occurred earlier in the day in Pittsfield Township, Michigan.

According to police, officers responded to a report of an assault around 4:10 p.m. local time. After identifying the suspect, law enforcement—assisted by the Saline Police Department—located Moore and transported him to the Washtenaw County Jail for further questioning. Investigators have stated that the incident does not appear to be random, and there is no threat to the general public.

Fired Just Hours Before the Arrest

Moore’s custody comes during a turbulent day for Michigan football. Earlier, the university announced his dismissal “with cause” after an internal review reportedly found that he had violated institutional policy through an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The university emphasized that the decision followed a formal investigation and was unrelated to the later police incident.

Legal Process Now Underway

Local authorities confirmed that prosecutors are currently reviewing the case, and Moore is expected to appear in court for arraignment once the investigation progresses. As of now, specific charges have not been formally announced.

Michigan Names Interim Coach

Following Moore’s removal, Michigan appointed Biff Poggi, the associate head coach, as the interim leader ahead of the team’s upcoming bowl game. The university assured players and fans that program operations will continue smoothly despite the sudden leadership change.

A Sudden Fall From Leadership

Moore, 39, took over as Michigan’s head coach in early 2024 after the departure of Jim Harbaugh. His tenure was marked by early challenges and internal reviews, but the latest developments have led to a dramatic and unexpected turn in his career.

The police investigation remains active, and additional details are expected once prosecutors finalize their review. More updates will follow as the story develops.
